For first-time donor Yap Juan Sun 18, the idea of giving blood was nerve-wracking. Awaiting his SPM results and working part-time as a tutor, the Subang Jaya resident admitted he felt anxious beforehand—especially about needles and being connected to the donation equipment for an extended period. But once it was over, he said he felt great and experienced no dizziness, adding that he was motivated by a desire to help others and believed donating would also allow his body to produce new blood.
Yap was among the donors who turned up for the Lions Club of Subang Jaya’s “Be a Hero Today” blood donation drive, a one-day campaign held at AEON BIG Subang Jaya in collaboration with the National Blood Bank. Running from 10am to 4pm, the drive successfully collected 96 bags of blood, with steady participation from residents throughout the day.
Organising Chairperson Lion Lee Pei Wen led the programme, supported by 20 Lions and Leos who handled donor registration, coordination, and on-site assistance to keep operations smooth. Representatives from the National Blood Bank noted that blood reserves are currently low and expressed appreciation for the strong turnout, which helped replenish much-needed supplies for hospitals and emergency care.
The organisers also acknowledged the role of partners who supported the drive. Sunway Medical Centre contributed free medical tests for donors, while MPP1 assisted with donor recruitment. SJ Echo served as the media partner to help publicise the campaign ahead of the event, and AEON BIG Subang Jaya supported the initiative as venue partner.
Subang Member of Parliament Wong Chen, together with Councillors Ken Chia and Chris Johnston, dropped in during the drive to encourage volunteers and donors. The Lions Club of Subang Jaya regards blood donation support for the National Blood Bank as a vital community service and carries out the initiative annually.
