The Lions Club of Subang Jaya (LCSJ), together with its sister club, the Lions Club of Lungtan, Taiwan, carried out a joint community project at SMK USJ 8 last month, refurbishing and upgrading the school’s Bilik Sejarah to provide a more engaging environment for students to learn history.
The refurbished room, now named Makmal Sejarah De Mercu Tun Sri Lanang after the renowned Malay historian, received a fresh coat of paint, repaired fittings, and new furniture. Its centerpiece is a large black-and-white iconic photograph of Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, proclaiming independence at Merdeka Stadium in 1957.
Headmaster Rozhan Zakaria welcomed the Lions delegation with a speech that included Chinese phrases, much to the delight of the two dozen visiting members from Lungtan Lions Club, who were touring a Malaysian school for the first time. He expressed his gratitude to the Lions for their continued support, not only through this refurbishment project but also in the many other initiatives that benefit students in need.
The visit by the Lungtan Lions is part of a long-standing annual tradition, where the Taiwanese club travels to Subang Jaya to strengthen fellowship with their counterparts. Each year, the joint programme includes a community service project.
Following the classroom launch, the Lions delegation visited the school’s food bank, a year-old initiative funded by LCSJ and managed by the school. The food bank provides basic necessities such as rice, cooking oil, and dry goods to students and their families from underprivileged backgrounds. It has become an important support system to ensure that no student’s education is compromised by hunger at home.
The collaboration between the Subang Jaya and Lungtan Lions not only enhanced learning facilities for students but also strengthened international fellowship, highlighting the shared mission of Lions Clubs worldwide to serve humanity and uplift communities through practical projects.
