In their signature initiative called Sight First, the Lions Club of Subang Jaya generously provided free prescription spectacles to 36 deserving students from SMK USJ 8.
This collaborative project involved the teachers of SMK USJ 8, who identified students from underprivileged backgrounds suspected to have vision problems. In May 2023, these students underwent comprehensive eye examinations, leading to the identification of 36 individuals in need of prescription spectacles.
A momentous occasion took place on June 14, 2023, as a small ceremony unfolded in the school’s library, where all 36 students were presented with their free prescription glasses. The distinguished presence of ADUN Subang Jaya YB Michelle Ng further added significance to the event.
Rozhan Zakaria, the headmaster of SMK USJ 8, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Lions for selecting their school to be a part of the Sight First project. Given that approximately 75% of the students hail from B40 families, he acknowledged the profound impact of this initiative. He extended his appreciation to the dedicated teachers and the school’s Leo Club for their instrumental role in coordinating this collaborative effort with the Lions.
Lion Fung Zhideng, the Sight First Organizing Chairperson of the Lions Club of Subang Jaya, shared poignant observations about the students. He highlighted the unfortunate reality that many of these children had been grappling with poor vision and had never owned a pair of glasses. Some of them even expressed that their families couldn’t afford them. Fung is optimistic that the provided spectacles would be transformative, significantly enhancing the students’ educational pursuits and daily lives.
