RESIDENTS STAGE RARE PROTEST OVER PROPOSED SUNWAY–KEWAJIPAN FLYOVER

Subang MP Promises Transparency and Accountability on Controversial Project

A rare street protest took place in SS14 over the weekend as Subang Jaya residents gathered to voice their objections to the proposed elevated flyover linking Sunway Lagoon Selatan to Persiaran Kewajipan.

The half-hour demonstration — the first of its kind in many years — saw residents expressing concern that the project could worsen traffic flow, create noise and pollution issues, and further burden the already congested Subang Jaya city roads.

Subang Member of Parliament Wong Chen arrived at the scene shortly after the protest to meet with the residents. Speaking after the dialogue, Wong Chen said, “I was in SS14 to meet the residents who are against the elevated flyover project. I promised my constituents that as soon as my Parliament sittings end, I will personally look into the matter and promised them transparency and accountability from the local government.”

The proposed flyover — set to connect the Sunway Lagoon Selatan area to the Subang–Kelana Link via Persiaran Kewajipan — was proposed in late 2023 (https://sjecho.com.my/community/sunway-proposes-flyover-across-kewajipan-as-part-of-traffic-dispersal-plan/)  as part of an initiative to ease traffic congestion along one of Subang Jaya’s busiest arteries. According to reports, the project aims to divert through-traffic away from Persiaran Kewajipan’s ground-level intersections.

However, many SS14 residents have voiced strong opposition, citing the lack of consultation and potential negative impact on the community.

Protest organisers said they were not against progress but wanted more transparency and meaningful engagement from authorities before construction begins.

“This isn’t just about traffic. It’s about how such developments change the character of our neighbourhoods,” said one resident, adding that the elevated structure would run uncomfortably close to residential blocks and schools.

The Subang MP assured residents that their concerns will be brought to the attention of local authorities.

“I will ensure that the decision-making process is open and that the people of Subang Jaya are kept informed every step of the way,” Wong Chen said.

The project had gone through three townhall engagement sessions with residents and stakeholders. Based on public feedback, several design adjustments were made, including:

  • Cancellation of the original ramp-down to Persiaran Kewajipan

  • Upgrading of the Kewajipan–NPE roundabout by the developer

  • Installation of sound barriers along the flyover

  • Improved drainage at the Kewajipan–SS14/8 junction

  • Green landscaping elements on the flyover pillars

The proposed flyover, if approved, is expected to link directly from the Sunway Lagoon Selatan intersection to the Subang–Kelana elevated highway network. For now, the project remains under public scrutiny — and the growing voices from the ground suggest that the final decision will be one to watch closely.
