Although local government affairs sit outside the formal powers of a Member of Parliament, Subang MP Wong Chen has stepped in to address two contentious urban issues following weeks of complaints from residents.
Wong explained that MPs are tasked with national responsibilities such as making laws, working with ministries, shaping the federal budget and handling foreign policy. Matters involving local planning, approvals and enforcement fall squarely under the mayor and city councillors, who answer to the state government and the ADUNs.
Even so, the growing unease among Subang Jaya residents has pushed him to intervene.
“Today, my attention is on local government matters,” Wong said. “After meeting disgruntled constituents and listening to their complaints over the last two months, and now that Parliament is in recess, I finally met up with the MBSJ Mayor Datuk Amirul Azizan this morning in his office at ten thirty.”
The one hour meeting focused on two hot topics: the SS14 Subang Jaya flyover and the proposed development near the Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve in Kinrara.
Wong said both parties reached a general understanding and agreed to give proper consideration to the concerns of all affected groups.
On the SS14 flyover, he has written to the mayor to request a fresh traffic impact assessment and access to the existing report.
As for the Kinrara project, the mayor has agreed to keep the MP’s office updated on all related developments. Wong added that he will release a detailed press statement after meeting residents next Monday morning.
The MP said his involvement is driven by the gravity of the issues raised by the community, even if these matters fall outside the usual scope of an MP’s authority.
