Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City and Siemens Healthineers Launch Malaysia’s First Photon-Counting CT Scanner

Pioneering a new era of diagnostic imaging with greater precision, safety and patient comfort

Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC) has marked a major milestone in Malaysian healthcare with the launch of the country’s first photon-counting CT scanner, developed in collaboration with Siemens Healthineers. The introduction of this next-generation imaging technology positions SMC at the forefront of diagnostic innovation and reinforces its commitment to delivering world-class care through advanced medical solutions.

Photon-counting CT represents a significant leap forward in medical imaging. By detecting and measuring individual photons, the technology produces ultra-high-resolution images that allow clinicians to visualise subtle tissue differences, micro-lesions and complex anatomical structures with unprecedented clarity. Importantly, it also enables high-quality imaging at a lower radiation dose, enhancing patient safety and comfort.

The new system supports a wide range of clinical applications, including cardiology, neurology, oncology, musculoskeletal, paediatric and pulmonology cases. Faster scan times and reduced radiation exposure make it particularly beneficial for children, older adults and patients requiring repeated imaging.

Equipped with advanced spectral imaging and AI-enabled features such as myExam Companion and GO Technologies, the system ensures consistent, high-quality results across scans. Dr. Adam Pany bin Abdullah, Senior Consultant Interventional Radiologist at SMC, noted that the technology “fundamentally changes what we can see and how we care for patients,” delivering safer, more comfortable exams while improving clinical workflow and diagnostic confidence.
