The Great Mid-Year Reset

By Paul Yung

As we cross the halfway mark of the year and step into June, it’s the perfect moment to pause and ask ourselves a powerful question: are the goals we set at the beginning of the year still serving us? Too often, we lock ourselves into January intentions with a kind of stubborn loyalty, thinking that to change direction would mean we failed. But growth isn’t linear, and neither is success. The truth is, life happens in seasons, and each season invites a new version of us to show up. Resetting your goals in the middle of the year isn’t a sign of failure, it’s a sign of wisdom.

Whether you’ve fallen short of the milestones you laid out six months ago, or you’ve already blown past them, now is a golden opportunity to realign with your values, refresh your energy, and recommit with clarity. Because goals are not just boxes to tick off. They’re compasses meant to guide us toward a life of fulfillment, not pressure cookers that trap us in stress and guilt.

So how do we do this in a way that feels authentic and practical?

Start with reflection, not action. Find a quiet moment early morning with a coffee, or late at night when the world is still and take stock. Think about the different facets of your life: your career or business, your relationships, your family, your friendships, and your mental and emotional well-being. Ask yourself: What’s working? What’s no longer aligned? What have I been neglecting?

Maybe your business has taken off, and your calendar is full but you’re missing family dinners, and you haven’t had a deep conversation with your closest friend in months. Or perhaps you’ve focused heavily on health and well-being and feel physically better than ever, but your career feels stagnant or misaligned. This isn’t about guilt. It’s about awareness. Life is a delicate balancing act, and when one area flourishes at the expense of another, it’s a signal, not a problem to recalibrate.

Once you’ve reflected, it’s time to reframe. Here’s a practical method I often share with entrepreneurs and high-performers who want to reset with intention. I call it the RENEW method:

R – Review what you set out to do in January. Which goals did you set with a sense of excitement? Which ones were driven by obligation, fear, or comparison?

E – Evaluate your progress without judgment. What goals have you met or exceeded? Which ones feel stuck or neglected? Identify the ‘why’ behind each.

N – Note the changes in your life and mindset. Who are you now that you weren’t six months ago? What matters more or less now?

E – Eliminate the goals that no longer fit. Let go of anything that feels forced. This creates space for clarity, creativity, and new direction.

W – Write new, focused goals for the next 90 days. Make them specific, aligned with your values, and balanced across the different areas of your life. Break them down into monthly or even weekly milestones to maintain momentum.

This mid-year reset isn’t about lowering your standards or shifting the goalpost to protect your ego. It’s about honoring your evolution. It’s about owning the truth that the person who set those goals in January is not the same person reading this article in June. And that’s something to celebrate.

One of the most beautiful things about being human is our capacity to grow, adapt, and choose again. When you reset your goals with courage and self-awareness, you create a life that reflects who you truly are, not who you thought you had to be.

So, here’s your invitation: don’t just keep pushing forward blindly. Take a breath. Take stock. And then take bold, intentional steps in the direction that feels right for this chapter of your life. Because success isn’t about doing it all. It’s about doing what matters most with heart, with purpose, and with joy.

And as we reflect on what matters most, let’s not forget the incredible role of the fathers and father figures in our lives.  Whether it’s your dad, a mentor, an uncle, or someone who stepped in when you needed guidance, don’t forget to raise a glass to them this June.  Remember, anyone can be a father, but it takes a real man to be a dad.

Here’s to them, to their sacrifice, compassion and guidance, to all you awesome gentlemen, Happy Father’s Day!
