Police have detained two underage teenagers after a viral TikTok video showed them riding modified bicycles dangerously through a busy traffic light junction in Putra Heights.
The video, which began circulating widely earlier this week, captured the pair darting across the junction despite the red light, forcing a car with the right of way to brake abruptly. The near miss sparked outrage among residents, many of whom raised concerns about the growing presence of risky “basikal lajak” activity in residential areas.
According to the Subang Jaya District Police Headquarters, the incident occurred on 4 December at about 5.55 pm. The teenagers were riding from Persiaran Putra Perdana towards Kampung Tengah when they ignored the traffic signal and shot across the intersection.
Police described the act as not only reckless but potentially fatal — both to the young riders and to unsuspecting motorists caught off guard by their stunt.
Following the video’s circulation, the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPT) moved swiftly and successfully located the duo in Bukit Lanchong. They were taken to the district headquarters for further investigation.
The case is being probed under Section 54(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Subang Jaya OCPD ACP Wan Azlan Wan Mamat urged the public to come forward if they have information that could assist the investigation. He assured that all informants’ identities will be protected.
Residents have long voiced concerns that the return of basikal lajak culture previously curbed through strict enforcement may again put youths at risk. Community leaders continue to call for stronger parental awareness, better engagement with at risk teens and consistent enforcement at known hotspots.
