Have you noticed someone around you behaving a little… off? Maybe they’re suddenly over-the-top friendly, constantly claiming to be wronged by everyone, or quietly withdrawing into their own world. We often shrug these off as “just a phase” or “that’s just how they are,” but sometimes these changes are silent cries for help.
Mental health struggles rarely show up with big, clear warning signs. More often, they sneak in subtly in the way someone stops replying to messages, skips their favourite hobbies, or insists the world is against them.
As friends, family members, and colleagues, it’s on us to pay attention. Start by checking in genuinely: “Hey, I noticed you’ve been a little quiet lately. Want to talk?” You’d be surprised how powerful it is for someone to feel seen and heard without judgement.
Watch for sudden mood swings, drastic changes in sleeping or eating habits, or uncharacteristic anger or sadness. If someone becomes excessively self-critical or pulls away from social circles entirely, these are red flags we shouldn’t ignore.
Remember, offering help doesn’t always mean solving their problems. Sometimes, it’s simply sitting next to them in silence, sending that “thinking of you” text, or helping them connect to professional resources when they’re ready.
