SUBANG JAYA: A lorry load filled with bags of ketum leaves from Teluk Intan was intercepted at Bukit Puchong on June 19 by Subang Jaya Police.
Subang Jaya OCPD ACP Risikin Satiman said officers on their crime prevention rounds along Jalan Tasik Prima in Bukit Puchong spotted a lorry being driven suspiciously.
“The lorry driver spotted the policemen and sped off. A chase ensued before officers managed to intercept the vehicle and detained the Bukit Puchong suspect who is in his 30s.”
“We found many bags containing ketum leaves. We seized 112kg of ketum leaves from the lorry,” he said, adding that the suspect who has no previous criminal records has been detained for investigations.
Risikin said the suspect had admitted that the ketum stash was brought in from Teluk Intan for distribution in Bukit Puchong.
He said police were investigating the case to ascertain if syndicates were involved and if other substances like ganja was being transported via this modus operandi.
“A 1.5 litre bottle of processed ketum can fetch a price of RM15. Consumers abuse it when they add in cough mixture or ‘ubat nyamuk’ to get a high.”
“We are investigating this case under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952,” he said.
