With dengue cases on the rise, Mayor Datuk Johary Anuar is on a warpath – Keep your backlane “garden” clean or risk having it carted away lock stock and barrel if mosquitoes are found breeding in your pots and containers.
UNHEEDED calls by the Subang Jaya City Council for house owners to clean and tidy up their backlane “kebun” have earned them the wrath of Mayor Datuk Johary Anuar.
“If house owners ignore our notice for them to clean up and check their garden along the backlanes, we will come in and cart away everything without any warning.”
“Unkempt gardens in the backlanes have been identified as one of the main breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes,” he said after launching the inclusive park at USJ11/5 recently.
Dengue cases have been on the rise over the last few weeks and calls for house owners to check their pots and containers in their backlane garden for mosquito breeding have fallen on deaf ears, according to Johary.
“You have given me no choice but to instruct my officers to cart away anything that appears to be at risk of being a mosquito breeding spot along back lanes.”
“Dengue kills. Cases have been rising and despite efforts by the council to Search and Destroy mosquito breeding spots, the numbers have not gone down. It means, mosquitoes are breeding within your compound and also along our backlanes,” he said.
Search and Destroy teams made up of MBSJ officers and community groups have more often than not found gardens along the backlanes ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Johary urged residents especially those who like gardening to spend just 10mins a week to check their compound and garden for stagnant water.
