From Sunway Metro to USJ1: The Back Alley Scandal That Exposes Subang Jaya’s “Number One” Lie

Subang Jaya is fast becoming a city that boasts of nice facades but what goes on in the back alleys has long been swept under the carpet. While authorities tell us about what they are doing to “upgrade” public facilities and infrastructure, they seem to have turned a blind eye to the dire straits behind all the façade.

Sunway Metro: Tourist-Friendly Front, Rat-Run Back

Take Sunway Metro in Bandar Sunway, for example. A recent walk around the commercial area revealed exactly why Kawasan Rukun Tetangga PJS9 chairman Abu Hassan Ahmad is fed up. The back lanes are pockmarked with potholes and choked with clogged drains that overflow onto the road whenever it rains.

“We are living in PJS9 and many of us come out to Sunway Metro to dine. We are concerned with the neglect of this area. We hope the authorities will pay more attention to this area,” he said. According to Abu Hassan:

• Road resurfacing jobs are so substandard that utility contractors might as well be spreading mud with a spoon.
• Dirty, unkempt alleys have become a welcome mat for rats (and snakes) to migrate into PJS9 neighbourhoods.
• Many shop houses – now operating as budget hotels – lack fire escape ladders at the rear, turning every back door into a potential death trap.

And yes, this is the same Sunway Metro that sits cheek-by-jowl with Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Resort Hotel and Sunway Lagoon – prime tourist territory. Nothing says “Visit Malaysia” like dodging open sewers and rodent roadblocks behind the glitter.

SS15/4C: The Great Drain Demolition That Never Was

Back in March 2026, MBSJ initiated a much-publicised crackdown on shop owners who had built concrete slabs over drains along the back lane of SS15/4C. Contractors were sent in, illegal slabs were smashed, and the council promised drains would be cleaned and restored.

Fast forward to August 2026: the dug-up drains remain in ruins, with no repairs in sight. The mess is slightly less clogged than before, but “restored” is a word that exists only in press statements.

USJ14: Foodie Paradise, Drainage Nightmare

Over in USJ14, where foodies flock for their makan-makan, an April 2026 MBSJ inspection found drains along Jalan USJ14/1K, 1L and 1M choked with sludge and littered with rubbish. The council vowed a crackdown on errant shop owners and food operators, plus a clean-up and repair blitz.

By August 2026, the drains are still clogged, the rubbish is still there, and nothing has been done. Perhaps the plan is to let nature take its course and evolve a new species of drain-dwelling catfish.

USJ1 Regalia: Where Puddles Could Double as Fish Farms

A recent rat eradication exercise in USJ1 Regalia Business Centre exposed the starkest contrast of all. The frontage of the shop houses looks reasonably maintained; the back lanes look like a war zone. The back lane of Jalan USJ1/1C is now impassable to vehicles, thanks to a minefield of potholes and rubbish.

• A massive puddle in the middle of the lane is so deep and stagnant that one volunteer joked it could be used to keep fish.

The Real Question

So, here’s the question. When are we going to see equal attention being given to our back lanes? Perhaps the front provides better optics for ribbon-cutting ceremonies and Instagrammable “smart city” shots, but the neglect of our back lanes truly reflects our attitude and priorities.

Until MBSJ treats the back alleys of Sunway Metro, SS15, USJ14 and USJ1 with the same urgency as the frontages, Subang Jaya will remain a city of shiny masks and rotting foundations.
