Combating Dengue: Effective Measures to Prevent Mosquito Breeding in Your Compound

Dengue continues to strike havoc and disrupt the lives of residents in Subang Jaya.

Taking it in their stride, communities mobilised search and destroy initiatives as well as cleaning up their surroundings as they try to stem the wave of dengue mosquitoes in their respective neighbourhoods.

Major efforts were activated by the Petaling District Health Combi Dengue team in USJ2 where a death caused by dengue was reported; while others in SS15/2 and USJ1 Angsana carried out search and destroy mosquito breeding spots efforts as well as cleaning up their surroundings.

Here are some tips which you can adopt to keep dengue at bay:

  1. Remove stagnant water: Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so eliminate any potential breeding sites by emptying, covering, or treating any containers that can hold water. This includes flower pots, buckets, discarded tires, birdbaths, and any other objects that can collect rainwater.
  2. Clean and maintain water containers: If you have water storage containers, such as barrels or tanks, ensure they are properly covered to prevent mosquitoes from accessing them. Clean them regularly and scrub the inner walls to remove any mosquito eggs.
  3. Maintain swimming pools and ponds: Keep swimming pools clean and chlorinated, and ensure that ponds or other water features are properly circulated or treated with mosquito larvicides.
  4. Clear gutters and drains: Regularly clean out gutters, as clogged gutters can collect stagnant water. Also, ensure that drains are free of debris and flow properly to prevent water accumulation.
  5. Maintain your garden: Trim bushes, shrubs, and grass regularly to reduce resting areas for mosquitoes. Additionally, remove any discarded items from your yard that can collect water.
  6. Use mosquito repellents: Apply mosquito repellents or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin when you are outside, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  7. Wear protective clothing: When outdoors, wear long sleeves, long pants, socks, and shoes to minimize exposed skin and reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
  8. Install window and door screens: Ensure that all windows and doors are properly screened to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.
  9. Use mosquito nets: Sleep under a mosquito net, especially if you live in an area with a high dengue risk.
  10. Educate your community: Spread awareness about dengue prevention and the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding sites to your neighbors and community members.

Remember, dengue prevention is a collective effort, so encourage your neighbors and community to also take measures to prevent mosquito breeding and protect themselves from mosquito bites.
