“Dire” Conditions in USJ9: MBSJ Steps In, Notices Issued, Cleanup Underway

USJ9’s “back lane mess” finally gets hit with notices. MBSJ tells operators: Clear the drains, stop blocking public spaces

If you’ve driven through USJ9 and wondered why the lanes feel tighter, dirtier, and more chaotic than they should… you’re not alone.

After a stream of complaints, Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) has issued notices to a wholesale market operator, along with eateries and shop lot owners in USJ9’s commercial zone.

The alleged issues? Using public space like private property, obstructing traffic, and building illegal extensions at the front and back of shop lots.

MBSJ MPP Zon 3 councillor Christopher Joseph said the complaints about the wholesale market kept coming, so he went to see the situation for himself.

“With the number of complaints received about the wholesale market, I decided to check out the state of the lane especially the one closest to the particular outlet,” he said.

“Dire” conditions: Litter everywhere, drains clogged

What he found wasn’t pretty.

Christopher described the lane as being in a dire state with litter visible almost everywhere and drains clogged.

And it wasn’t just cleanliness.

Items from the wholesaler were allegedly stored along the back lane, contributing to obstruction and making the area difficult to navigate.

Grills built over drains — making cleaning “impossible”

Here’s the part that raised eyebrows.

Christopher said the wholesale market operators had constructed grills over the back lane drains; a setup that prevents proper drain cleaning by MBSJ.

“MBSJ has issued a notice for the operator to remove the illegal grills at the back of the shop lot,” he said.

Not just one shop lot — USJ9 and USJ10 cleanup starts now

Christopher stressed this isn’t a one-off.

“It’s an all-out effort to clean up USJ9 and USJ10. We are starting with USJ9,” he said.

Shop lots that allegedly extended the back of their premises illegally were issued notices to dismantle or demolish the extensions.

Those who renovated the front area and covered drain covers, making drain maintenance harder were also issued notices to rectify the situation.

According to Christopher, illegal structures extending over drains (front or back) have contributed to clogged drains because cleaners and waste collectors can’t do their jobs when access is blocked.

Enforcement already ongoing — KDEB cleaning may take days

Over the past two days, enforcement teams from MBSJ’s Health, Environment Management and Building Department issued notices to the wholesale market operator for multiple issues, including drain access and obstructions in the back lane.

KDEB workers were also on site carrying out cleaning works.

But residents and business owners should expect the cleanup to take time. It may take a couple of days to fully clear and restore the area.

Christopher said he’ll keep checking in.

“I will be monitoring periodically, not just on this street but USJ9 and Taipan in particular,” he said.
