“Old Liao, But Still Going Strong” – Former Subang Jaya ADUN Dato’ Lee Hwa Beng, 72, Is Living His Best Life After Politics

For many longtime Subang Jaya residents, Dato’ Lee Hwa Beng wasn’t just a politician – he was Subang Jaya.

Serving three consecutive terms from 1995 to 2008, Lee remains the longest-serving ADUN for the constituency, helping shape the township during its most formative years. Beyond roads and development, he played a key role in planting the early seeds of community-building initiatives that still impact residents today.

Among his contributions, Lee was instrumental in pushing for the establishment of a Klinik Kesihatan in Subang Jaya; a need he recognised early as the township rapidly grew. During his years as ADUN Subang Jaya, Lee also built 2 Chinese schools – SJKC Chee Wen & SJKC Tun Tan Cheng Lock.

He also initiated the challenge to set up what would later become SJEcho, now a well-known community platform that continues to report on local issues and stories.

In addition, Lee was closely involved in helping start the Children’s Wish Society of Malaysia in Subang Jaya; an NGO that continues to fulfil the wishes of terminally ill children across the country, bringing hope to families in their most difficult moments.

But what happens after the political spotlight fades?

We caught up with the 72-year-old former assemblyman, and let’s just say, retirement looks pretty good on him.

From Politics to Peaceful Living

After losing in the 2008 General Election, Lee made a firm decision: step away for good. “After I lost in 2008, I decided to quit politics after spending 30 to 40 years in it,” he shared.

Despite receiving offers from other parties to return for the 2013 elections; especially following his involvement in exposing the PKFZ scandal, Lee chose not to look back.

“I was sacked by my own party. But that was it for me.”

Golf, Hiking, Swimming – Repeat

These days, Lee keeps himself busy with a routine many would envy. “If I’m in the country, it’s two days of golf, two days of trekking, and one day of swimming,” he said, adding that he completes a 500m swim during his sessions.

He has also taken up trekking and travels frequently, both locally and abroad.

But don’t mistake this for a packed schedule without heart – family comes first.

Family First, Always

Lee, now a grandfather of five, spends his weekends surrounded by loved ones. “Two of my daughters are in Malaysia, so we gather every weekend. Saturday and Sunday we come together.”

And in a moment, many can relate to, he joked: “After my golf, I have to sleep for one hour in the afternoon – old liao.”

At the center of it all is his wife, Datin Lee Soo Soo, along with their three daughters and grandchildren.

“I decided to give priority to my wife (whom I had neglected during my active politic days), my children, my grandchildren, and a small circle of close friends. This is my life.”

No Comeback, No Regrets

Unlike many former politicians, Lee is clear – he has no intention of returning. “In a way, we are has-beens. We won’t get the same respect if we do,” he said candidly.

He also keeps a respectful distance from active community involvement to avoid giving the wrong impression. “I don’t keep in touch much with residents because I don’t want people to think I’m coming back. But if anyone calls me, I’ll still meet them for a drink or a meal.”

However, he continues to stay updated on Subang Jaya through SJEcho and also keeps in touch with former supporters.

A Message to Subang Jaya Residents

Lee also shared a thoughtful reflection on politics today; one shaped by decades of experience. “People should choose their wakil rakyat based on who they are, not the party they represent,” he said.

“Don’t care about race. If they are good, choose them. That’s the only cure for our political situation.” He also acknowledged his successor, Hannah Yeoh, noting that she did a good job after he stepped down.

“People may not have liked the party I represented, but maybe personally, they missed me.”

Living Life to the Fullest

As for now, Lee is content and thriving.

“To Subang Jaya residents who know me, don’t worry. I am enjoying my life to the fullest. God willing, I will continue to be fit and have a good life.”

Proof that sometimes, stepping away isn’t the end of the story. It’s just the beginning of a different, quieter, and perhaps even more fulfilling chapter.
