It Needs Your Help to Keep it Running

SUBANG Jaya’s Community Ambulance is in critical condition!

With just another six months of funds left to sustain its operations to save lives in Subang Jaya, the community ambulance service may come to an abrupt end if funds are not replenished.

Serving the community for six years now, the SJ Community Ambulance has been providing its “one call away emergency hotline” and played a pivotal role throughout the pandemic but its days are numbered with operational funds dwindling.

SJ Beacon’s president TH Teoh said plans to organise a fundraiser back in 2020 were foiled by the pandemic which stretched on to the end of 2021.

“We had planned to organise a major fundraiser back in 2020 but it was not possible. Since then, we had to literally rely on ad hoc funding from different sources to keep running.”

“In 2020, our paramedics attended to 557 medical emergency cases and this figure skyrocketed to 1008 for 2021. Obviously this means our operational costs doubled but our funding source remained the same,” he said.

Teoh appealed to residents to step forward and organise their own fundraisers to help keep the community ambulance service running.

“Everywhere we go, people tell us how good the ambulance service we are running is. They praise the speed, efficiency and professionalism of our paramedics.”

“We need to translate these praises to funds that will help us continue to serve Subang Jaya,” he added.

On a monthly basis, the community ambulance requires a minimum of RM15,000 to RM20,000 to operate. This covers the salaries of the paramedics, fuel and maintenance of the vehicles and medical equipment on board.

According to Teoh, RM100,000 was raised in 2021 to help keep the ambulance service running.

“Lions Club of Subang Jaya threw in a matching grant challenge of RM50,000 and fortunately this was matched by other donors within a month.”

“The amount raised helped us continue running but we are really at the critical level now for more funds to keep this service alive,” he added.

Last month, the SS19/1 Residents Association passed the hat around their neighbourhood and raised RM13,380 for the ambulance.

“We hope all the Residents Associations, Rukun Tetangga groups and also the corporate sector will come forward and help us keep this service running.”

“The funds raised will help save lives. Who knows? One day, we too may need the ambulance to save our own lives,” he said.
