Subang Jaya: Nation Above Self

By Michelle Ng, ADUN Subang Jaya

I hope that all of you are coping well with the new normal. Let us be reminded that this way of life would have to continue until the science community is able to find a vaccine for Covid-19.

As an update from our office, we have initiated a few programmes to meet different needs across Subang Jaya during the Movement Control Order:-

  1. Free grocery delivery for senior citizens;
  2. 1769 families to whom we delivered food aid;
  3. 1180 families who received 2 tonnes worth of fresh vegetables saved from Cameron Highlands;
  4. 4800 face shields made by Subangites for medical frontliners in Kuching, Shah Alam, Serian and Serdang.

The struggle at the moment is to find a way to reach out to Subangites, in place of the 15 or so community programmes that I usually attend over the weekend to meet residents. They could range from forums, festive celebrations, dengue awareness programmes, gotong-royong etc.

With online engagement becoming increasingly popular in place of physical contact, my office is likely to create more content on social media. We’re also thinking of doing live videos to keep in touch with the pulse on the ground.

In that regard, we would like to encourage Subangites to follow us on Facebook (@michelle.ngmeisze), Instagram (@michelle.ngmeisze) or Twitter (@michellengms).

For residents who wish to visit our office, please note the following Standard Operating Procedures in place:-

  1. Avoid visiting our office if your query can be answered through the phone (03-56312768), WhatsApp (017-2995975) or email (michelle.ngmeisze@outlook.com);
  2. If you must visit us, please come alone;
  3. Children under 13 years old will not be allowed entry;
  4. Our staff will ask for your name, IC number, address and contact number for our records in case a visitor is found to have Covid-19, and contact tracing needs to be done;
  5. Only two visitors are allowed in at any one time;
  6. Please sanitise your hands before coming in to the office;
  7. Consultation is limited to 10 minutes max;
  8. As for residents who are ill, we will ask for your contact details so that we can report the same to KKM, but you will be asked thereafter to return home immediately. For this purpose, we will be taking residents’ temperature at the door.

Over the course of the last few weeks, we have observed that Subangites on a whole are compliant with these procedures for their own premises. We have do occasionally receive feedback from the community of premises who can do better. On advice from the authorities, I am happy to note that these premises would make amendments to comply.

This is exactly the type of accountability that we need to keep each other in check. Our strength has always been our community, and it is with this that we will overcome the pandemic.
