Cop Shoots at Fleeing Vehicle in Taipan

Traffic policeman pursues fleeing vehicle from the junction of Da Men to USJ5 before firing two shots at the wheels

SUBANG JAYA, OCTOBER 9 2020: A Subang Jaya traffic policeman who was heading for his morning duties on his motorcycle towards the USJ-Hicom interchange landed up chasing a suspect in his vehicle all across USJ before he fired two shots at the tires to stop it.

Subang Jaya OCPD ACP Risikin Satiman who confirmed the incident on Thursday (October 8 2020) said the police officer noticed the suspect in the vehicle driving suspiciously on the opposite side of the road at the Persiaran Kewajipan-Persiaran Tujuan junction at around 730am.

“The driver of the white Nissan Almera was driving towards the Summit/Da Men junction while on his mobile phone. The officer, suspecting something amiss followed the vehicle right to the junction.”

“The officer hailed the driver and ordered him to stop his vehicle. The officer ordered the suspect to get out of the car but the latter declined to do so,” he said.

Risikin said the driver suddenly accelerated and drove off in the vehicle with the police officer in hot pursuit.

“The chase continued on Persiaran Murni. The police officer continued to order the suspect to stop his vehicle during the pursuit. At one point near USJ5 at the junction of Persiaran Bakti, the suspect tried to hit the policeman and run him off the road.”

“This was when the officer had no choice but to shoot twice at the tires of the fleeing vehicle, hitting one tire in the process,” he said, adding that the suspect continued to drive the vehicle until his right tire gave way near Persiaran Kewajipan around USJ9.

Risikin said the suspect was arrested on the spot by the policeman.

“Upon checking the vehicle, we found 188 cartons of contraband cigarettes. The suspect who hails from Johor has been remanded for eight days to facilitate investigations.”

“He will be investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder; Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in discharge of his public functions; and Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act for being in possession of contraband items,” he added.
