While many are busy tossing yee sang and hunting for the best CNY promos, the Lions Club of Subang Jaya chose to welcome the Year of the Horse a little differently, by showing up for the community’s elderly with time, cheer, and real support.
In a half-day charity programme around Subang Jaya, Lions members visited three old folks’ homes and brought along more than the usual festive basics. A full lion dance troupe joined the rounds, transforming quiet common rooms into lively mini celebration halls complete with drums, laughter, and that unmistakable “CNY is here” energy.
At each stop, residents received festive goodies, bright red T-shirts, and angpows. But it wasn’t just about the items. The simple moment of seniors changing into matching red shirts sparked smiles, jokes, and a shared sense of celebration; proof that sometimes-what matters most isn’t something expensive, but something together.
Adding even more life to the visits were members of the Leos from surrounding secondary schools and universities. The students spent time chatting with residents, helping to serve refreshments, and encouraging them to join in the festivities. For the young volunteers, it was a hands-on lesson in service and empathy; for the residents, it was a meaningful chance to connect with a younger generation.
Subang Member of Parliament Wong Chen also joined the Lions during the visits and presented vouchers to each of the homes to help replenish daily supplies; a practical contribution meant to support essentials long after the festive season ends.
Organising Chairperson Lion Lee Pei Wen said she was grateful for the heartwarming response from residents, adding that the mission was simple: bring joy, spend time, and remind the elderly that they are not forgotten.
The Lions Club of Subang Jaya has long stood by the belief that community service doesn’t always have to be a massive project with big stages and banners. Sometimes, it’s about showing up and making someone feel remembered, seen, and celebrated.
