NINETY one women successfully carried out their free do-it-yourself (DIY) cervical cancer screening recently thanks to the initiative which was spearheaded by Subang Jaya Medical Cancer, ROSE Foundation and SJ ECHO.

The large scale do-it-yourself screening was carried out at the Subang Jaya Police District hall.

As many as 106 ladies showed up for the program with 91 persons successfully carrying out the cervical cancer test. As many as 59 ladies comprising of police officers and also the wives of police officers participated in the self-screening program while 59 ladies from the Subang Jaya City Council and 17 members of the public also joined in the one-day program.

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that affects the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It is usually caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection. Cervical cancer is a significant health concern worldwide, but early detection and intervention can greatly improve outcomes.

Bryan Lin, Chief Executive Officer of SJMC said “Cervical cancer is often known as the ‘silent killer’, which develops slowly without any warning or symptoms. Our “If Not Now, When? #endcervicalcancer” programme aims to make a difference in society by making cervical screening more acceptable and accessible to women, especially those who may not be fully aware of the seriousness of this disease. As a healthcare provider, it is important for us to play our role to achieve a cervical cancer-free Malaysia and this means providing an opportunity for screening.”

Earlier this year, the same program was carried out in five People’s Housing Project (PPR) flats located at PJS7, Angsana USJ1, Sri Tanjung USJ16, SS13, and SS19/7.
