In this year-end piece, I would like to take the time to highlight some of the achievements from my office in 2019.
Smart Selangor Parking App
One complaint that I kept receiving in the first few months after taking office was how cumbersome it was to pay for parking. MPSJ at that time for legal reasons was not able to adopt the Smart Selangor Parking phone application. This meant that residents had to pay using either scratch coupons (if shops selling them were open), or through a parking machines (if they were in working condition). Having lobbied YB Ng Sze Han, the EXCO for Local Government, Public Transportation and New Village Development by asking for responses in the State Assembly, MPSJ and its councillors, the council was able to work through the kinks and implement the Smart Selangor Parking App in May 2019. The application is available on Google Play or the Apple App Store.
SJ+ Civic Programmes
Being a youth myself, I am passionate about youth affairs – even more so after the constitutional amendment to lower the voting age to 18 years old. This gave the youth arm of my office, SJ+, clear focus. Having engaged with the principals and parent-teacher association chairpersons of secondary schools in Subang Jaya, we will be rolling out the following Civic Programmes:-
Pusat Aktiviti Warga Emas
Subang Jaya will become an aging population. Residents in the SS area have lived here for about 30 years; USJ residents have lived here for about 25 years. Assuming at most bought their houses when they are 25, we already have many residents between the ages of 50-65 years old. Lessons from other constituencies that already have an aging population would reveal the importance of community in helping the elderly maintain sharp mental acumen, reducing loneliness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I felt that it was important to do the groundwork now. My office, through cooperation with the Senior Citizen’s Club of Subang Jaya, the Club has been selected by Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat to become a Pusat Aktiviti Warga Emas (PAWE) for Parlimen Subang. This means that they will receive RM100,000 for setting up the centre and operating expenses for 2019, with RM33,330 to follow every year. PAWE Subang has begun to expand their reach and have met with various associations and institutions to collaborate.
Tabled 3 Statement through JP PBT – unanimous adoption by the assembly
As part of the Select Committee on Local Government, I pushed for three statements to be tabled in the state assembly. They are on:-
Klinik Kesihatan
Both YB Wong Chen and my office worked hand-in-hand by issuing letters and meeting relevant decision makers to convince them to set up a Klinik Kesihatan for Subang Jaya. In March 2019, we received confirmation that the Selangor Health Department will propose that this be included in the 12th Malaysian Plan, in Rolling Plan 1. It will take a few years for approval and construction. If set up, the Klinik Kesihatan will contain facilities such as maternal and paediatric care, rehabilitation therapy, outpatient medical care, pharmaceutical support services, diagnostic imaging, dentistry and emergency care. The land identified for the Klinik Kesihatan is in USJ 1.
The three Statements were unanimously adopted by the State Assembly. What is pending is for directions to be given by the state executive. These Statements can be found on the Dewan Selangor website.
Those are some of the few major points from my office’s report card. It has been a tough year, but a fruitful one. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my team, councillors and residents who have been running with me on this journey. Truly, these achievements are their achievements as well.
In ending this piece, I would just like to wish all residents a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! I hope each of you get good rest with your family. In this regard, my office will be closed from 25 December 2019 to 2 January 2020 to allow my staff much needed rest.
See you all in 2020!
