Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Sim Tze Tzin said that such manufacturers were still concentrating on mixed coffee blends rather than coming up with new inventions.
Producers of the beverage need to make that shift and consider latest trends among coffee enthusiasts to remain competitive in the industry, he said.
“The Japanese, for example, have created a coffee machine that uses (coffee) capsules, which is a new trend. I think coffee entrepreneurs have to go beyond the 3-in-1 coffee blends.
“So far, we have the best 3-in-1 coffee manufacturers in this region. However, consumer preference has changed to coffee capsules and we need to move in that direction too,” he said at the Parliament sitting here today.
He was responding to a supplementary question by Wong Shu Qi (PH-Kluang) who wanted to know the ministry’s efforts in raising the income of coffee growers and in increasing local coffee production for export. — BERNAMA
